This impressive sales milestone is accompanied by Patch 1.0.1, the game’s first post-launch update designed to address gameplay complaints, specifically surrounding the notorious lockpicking mechanic.
Half a Million Prisoners in the Colony
The launch has been a major success for THQ Nordic. The game reached a concurrent player peak of nearly 78,000 on Steam shortly after the gothic-1-remake-launch, securing an 85% “Very Positive” rating from over 15,000 user reviews. Old-school fans and newcomers alike are braving the Barrier, proving that the classic colony structure still holds immense appeal in 2026.
Easing the Pain of Lockpicking
One of the major pain points for players at launch was the lockpicking minigame. In our previous coverage of how developers addressed lockpicking backlash, we noted that players felt the mechanic relied too heavily on frustrating trial-and-error, leading to broken lockpicks and wasted ore.
Patch 1.0.1 tackles this problem directly by introducing a brand-new lock difficulty indicator. Alternatively, if you want to keep using your current mod setup, you can easily roll back to the launch version (v1.0) on Steam by using the following steps:
- Open your Steam Library and locate Gothic 1 Remake.
- Right-click the game and select Properties.
- Navigate to the Game Versions & Betas (or Betas) tab.
- Click the dropdown menu and select the previousrelease branch.
Steam will download the older build, allowing you to play with your mods intact while the community updates their files for the new patch.
