The remake of Alkimia Interactive’s Gothic 1 Remake preserves the brutal difficulty of the 2001 classic. Survival in the Mining Colony depends heavily on your gear, and players are quickly searching for ways to acquire top-tier defenses like Gomez’s Ancient Ore Armor and Xardas’s Mage Armor. However, sequence-breaking the game’s mechanics or entering later chapters can trigger frustrating faction lockouts.
Here is how to get both armor sets, navigate the Chapter 4 locks, and bypass a notorious keybinding bug.
Stealing Gomez’s Ancient Ore Armor Early
The Ancient Ore Armor is the premier heavy armor in the game, providing massive protection (90 Edge/Blunt, 25 Point, 25 Fire, and 15 Ice/Wind/Energy resistances). While normally a late-game reward, you can steal it as early as Chapter 1 if you invest in the right skills.
To get the armor without resorting to combat:
- Learn pickpocketing from Fingers after you join the Old Camp. If you need to manage your stats first, review the learning points and skills guide.
- Locate Gomez in the Old Camp castle throne room.
- Approach him from behind and crouch.
- When Gomez stands up and turns around to sit back down, interact with him to pickpocket his Master Key.
- Head to his private quarters and open his chest to claim the armor.
Note: Obtaining this armor early trivializes combat against most beasts and guards. Additionally, players report that developer patches like Patch 1.0.2 may have adjusted NPC awareness or locked the key behind Chapter 5 progress, so this exploit might not work on all versions.
Acquiring Xardas’s Mage Armor (Robe of the Dark Arts)
If you are pursuing a magic-focused playstyle, the Robe of the Dark Arts (Xardas’s Mage Armor) is a highly sought-after piece of gear.
Unlike Gomez’s armor, this robe is strictly locked behind story progression:
- Reach Chapter 4: You must progress the story until you are tasked with finding Xardas in the Orc Territory.
- Defeat the Golems: Bypassing the magical barrier protecting Xardas’s tower requires defeating the Stone, Ice, and Fire Golems using their specific elemental weaknesses.
- Loot the Sunken Tower: During Chapter 5, explore Xardas’s Old Sunken Tower to find the chest containing the robe.
While the Robe of the Dark Arts features iconic visual styling, its raw defensive ratings are noticeably lower than the endgame ore armors. Mage characters should rely on spell distancing rather than face-tanking hits.
Chapter 4 Old Camp Lockout: The Fisk and Dexter Trade Issue
In Chapter 4, many players experience a situation where Old Camp traders like Fisk and Dexter refuse to conduct business, greeting the hero with “I trade only with people that follow the rules.”
This is not a bug. Following the collapse of the Old Mine, Gomez orders a lockdown and initiates a bloody purge of the Fire Mages. Even if you bribe Fletcher to slip past the outer gates, the camp’s economic infrastructure is shut down for outcasts. Attempting to trade is impossible, and you will eventually be forced to seek refuge with the other factions. If you find your progress stalled here, check how to avoid bricking your build in Chapter 6.
The Old Mine Collapse: What Changed?
Veterans of the original 2001 game will notice a significant narrative change regarding the Old Mine collapse. In the original, the mine’s flooding was described off-screen after the gates were raised.
In the remake, the disaster is much more active. The flooding reportedly occurs immediately after the player detonates a barrel of ore inside the mine. This physical explosion creates a clearer cause-and-effect relationship for the collapse, shifting the blame from abstract magical focus stones directly onto player-driven actions.
Rebinding Keys Bug: Cannot Loot Underwater
A common technical issue reported by the community involves custom keybindings. If you choose to rebind the default action key (F) to another button, it breaks the game’s physics interactions under water. Specifically, you will be unable to pick up items or open underwater containers.
Until Alkimia Interactive releases a hotfix, the easiest workaround is to keep the default keybindings active. If you must use a custom layout (for example, moving movement keys from WASD), utilize external software like AutoHotKey to remap your keyboard inputs externally rather than altering the options menu in-game.
