The recently released patch 1.0.3 for Gothic 1 Remake was meant to address critical quest blockers and improve facial animations. However, the update reportedly introduced a new, frustrating issue where dialogue options disappear or freeze when players talk to key NPCs, including Melvin, Raven, and Stone.
To address this breakdown, developer Alkimia Interactive and publisher THQ Nordic have deployed an experimental hotfix. Rather than pushing it to the main game branch immediately, the developers have placed it on Steam’s public testing branch so players can bypass the progression blocks while they finish testing the fix.
How to Opt-in to the Public Testing Branch on Steam
For PC players experiencing dialogue freezes or missing options in the colony, switching to the beta branch takes just a few steps:
- Open your Steam library and locate Gothic 1 Remake.
- Right-click the game and select Properties.
- Click on the Betas tab on the left-hand menu.
- From the Beta Participation dropdown menu, select
publictesting. - Close the menu and wait for Steam to download the update.
Once the download finishes, launch the game. Your save files should remain compatible, and you will be able to complete conversations with Melvin, Raven, and Stone without the game locking up.
Console Players and Remaining Issues
While PC players can access this experimental update immediately, players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S must wait for a formal patch to pass console certification. This means console players who are currently stuck on conversations with key characters like Raven or Stone might need to pause progress or load an earlier save game from before the 1.0.3 update.
Additionally, players have reported other technical issues following the latest update, including audio drops on PlayStation 5 and camera glitches during conversation transitions. The developers have acknowledged these bugs and stated they are working on a more permanent update for all platforms.
