With Gothic 1 Remake out for a month, players are beginning to look past the initial nostalgia and scrutinize the core systems of Alkimia Interactive’s reimagining. Two major discussion points have taken over the community: a severely unbalanced ore-economy that renders hunting skills practically useless, and a massive power gap between Dexterity-focused builds and magic-focused characters.
Additionally, a progression-blocking dialogue bug in Chapter 1 has left some players stranded. Here is what is going on in the colony right now.
The Trophy Fiasco: Dynamic Pricing vs. Hunting Skills
In the original 2001 game, learning hunting skills from trainers to skin scavengers, pull teeth from wolves, or extract claws was a reliable way to make ore. In the remake, however, this loop is frustratingly broken.
Players are calling this the “Trophy Fiasco.” Learning these skills is expensive, requiring 150 to 250 ore each from trainers in the early game. However, the remake introduces a dynamic pricing system. When you try to sell your hard-earned animal skins and teeth, merchants offer a measly 1 to 10 ore. As you dump more trophies onto them, the value plummets to near zero.
Compounding this problem is that traders quickly run out of ore. Meanwhile, low-risk activities like pickpocketing (especially when using telekinesis for remote thefts) or simply knocking down NPCs to loot their inventories yield massive amounts of ore. Right now, investing in hunting skills is a trap, and the community is hoping Alkimia addresses this economic imbalance in a future patch.
Build Disparities: Dex Archer Dominance vs. Weak Magic
For players trying to plan their best-builds, the consensus is clear: Dexterity builds are currently the strongest and safest option in the colony.
Unlike strength or magic, Dexterity damage scales exceptionally well. Crucially, most monsters and human NPCs have zero piercing resistance. An archer with a decent bow can comfortably clear almost the entire colony map during Chapter 1.
On the other end of the spectrum, rune-magic feels incredibly underwhelming. Magic damage does not scale with your main attributes (like Mana) the way melee and ranged weapons scale with Strength and Dexterity. Furthermore, upgrading your magic circle is strictly gated by story progression, preventing mages from scaling their power organically. Combined with slow casting speeds and high magic resistance on mid-to-late-game enemies, playing a pure mage right now is a chore compared to the high-efficiency Dexterity path.
Bug Alert: Avoid the “Mission Caine” Dialogue Lockout
If you are currently exploring the camps, watch out for a nasty progression bug in the quest involving Caine.
Some players report that after finding Caine, they went straight to Cor Kalom, who then sent them to Yberion. When returning to Raven to update him, Raven instructs the player to go tell Cor Kalom about Caine. Because the player has already done this out of order, the dialogue option is gone, leaving the player permanently stuck with Raven without any options to progress.
Until a patch resolves this, the only fix is to load an earlier save. Make sure to talk to Raven first before speaking with Cor Kalom about Caine.
