The harsh and unforgiving world of the Valley of Mines is known for its brutal difficulty and uncompromising design, but nothing is more devastating to a playthrough than a progression-blocking bug. Recently, a significant and frustrating issue has emerged in Gothic 1 Remake during the pivotal transition into Chapter 4. After Gomez’s infamous betrayal, players are tasked with escaping the Old Camp alongside Milten through a secret underground tunnel. However, community reports are highlighting a severe softlock where Milten vanishes or gets stuck, requiring a specific magical item that abruptly becomes completely inaccessible.
For players who are currently navigating the mid-game and gathering their focus stones, understanding this bug is critical to saving dozens of hours of progress. In the following detailed report, we will examine the exact triggers of the Milten escape bug, why the humble Meatbug transformation scroll is at the center of the controversy, and the necessary precautions you must take before advancing the main storyline into the fourth chapter.
The Chapter 4 Turning Point
To understand why this bug is so punishing, we must first look at the massive narrative shift that occurs in Chapter 4. Once you complete the primary objectives involving the magical artifacts and return to the Old Camp, you are met with heavily guarded, closed gates. Gomez, consumed by absolute paranoia after the catastrophic collapse of the Old Mine, has ordered the execution of the Fire Mages and effectively declared war on the other factions within the barrier.
This monumental event completely upends the Ore Economy and your carefully established trade routes. The merchants, skill trainers, and quest givers within the castle walls are no longer accessible to you. If you approach the gates or attempt to bypass the guards, you will be attacked on sight with lethal force. Your only ally left in the immediate vicinity is Milten, the youngest of the Fire Mages, who narrowly managed to survive the massacre.
According to the intended main quest flow, you meet Milten just outside the camp walls. He then directs you toward a secret escape tunnel to safely bypass the heightened security and flee the area. This tunnel is fraught with debris, collapsed ceilings, and tight spaces, designed to test the player’s resourcefulness. Unfortunately, it is within the confines of this very tunnel that the game’s AI pathing system is reportedly breaking down.
The Milten Escape Bug Explained
Based on increasingly frustrated accounts from the community, the progression bug manifests shortly after you enter the secret escape tunnel with Milten. Instead of smoothly following the Nameless Hero or leading the way to the exit, Milten’s artificial intelligence and pathfinding seemingly fail against the complex geometry of the cave.
Players report that Milten either gets hopelessly stuck on rubble collision meshes, loops his walking animation in place, or completely disappears from the game world altogether. The quest log updates to “Gomez had the Fire Mages killed,” and the next objective explicitly requires you to successfully navigate the tunnel with your companion. Because Milten is technically missing or stalled out, the script trigger to complete the escape and transition to the next phase of the narrative never fires.
This isn’t the first time Milten has struggled with the Unreal Engine 5 transition. We previously covered his erratic companion behavior in our Status Report: Chapter 3 Milten Bug, but this new Chapter 4 iteration is far more destructive due to the geographical and economic lockdown of the Old Camp.
The Meatbug Scroll Dilemma
In a fully functional playthrough, the secret tunnel contains environmental sections that are far too small for a human character model to walk through. Gothic 1 Remake handles these classic environmental puzzles by encouraging the creative use of transformation magic. Specifically, the Meatbug Transformation Scroll is required to morph your character into a tiny scavenger insect, allowing you to seamlessly crawl under the debris and unlock the path forward from the other side.
Unlike standard combat spells which require you to invest precious Learning Points and Skills into magic circles, transformation scrolls are one-time-use consumable items. Any character, regardless of whether they are a heavily armored mercenary or a novice from the swamp, can cast them. The Meatbug transformation specifically is not designed for combat—the creature has virtually no health and cannot attack—but its tiny collision box makes it the ultimate infiltration tool for reaching secret areas.
If Milten gets stuck during the escape sequence, community members have discovered that transforming into a Meatbug and exploring the deepest crevices of the tunnel can sometimes reset his position or allow you to reach his broken waypoint to force a dialogue trigger. However, there is a massive catch that is ruining playthroughs: you need to actually have a Meatbug scroll currently in your inventory.
If you don’t have one, you would normally just walk up to a nearby mage or scroll vendor and buy one. But because Chapter 4 turns the entire Old Camp hostile, you are entirely cut off from the vendors inside the walls. Furthermore, players report that trying to leave the area to find other merchants might not work while the escape script is actively running, or that you simply won’t survive the gauntlet of high-level guards outside without Milten’s help. If you are stuck in the tunnel without a Meatbug scroll, and you cannot trade for one, you are effectively trapped in a softlock.
How to Prevent the Chapter 4 Softlock
Given the severity of this issue and the lack of an immediate official hotfix, proactive preparation is your only reliable defense. You must follow these steps before triggering the Fire Mages’ death sequence to ensure your save file remains safe.
1. Maintain Rolling Saves
If there is one golden rule in classic European RPGs, it is to never rely on a single save file. The user who recently reported this bug on the community forums noted they only had one save, which was automatically overwritten after Gomez had already killed the mages. At that point, the Old Camp was already locked, and the bug was already active in the tunnel.
Always create a dedicated manual hard save at the beginning of each chapter. Furthermore, maintain at least three rotating manual saves during your active play sessions. Do not rely entirely on the game’s autosave feature, as it often triggers precisely when you enter a new, potentially bugged area.
2. Stockpile Transformation Scrolls Early
Do not wait until Chapter 4 to buy utility scrolls. While focusing purely on destruction magic for your Early Game Mage Build is a natural instinct, you must invest some of your hard-earned ore into utility and exploration.
Visit Cronos in the New Camp, or the Baal merchants in the Swamp Camp, and purchase at least three to four Meatbug Transformation Scrolls during Chapter 2 or Chapter 3. Keep them in your inventory exclusively for environmental puzzles and emergency AI resets. Never sell them back to vendors for quick ore.
3. Complete All Old Camp Business
Because you will completely lose access to the Old Camp’s infrastructure, ensure you have maximized your time with their exclusive trainers. Buy out any permanent stat-boosting potions, unique faction weapons, and rare crafting materials before you hand in the final Focus Stone. Once the gates close, those resources are gone for a significant portion of the game.
Alternative Solutions and Marvin Mode
If you are already trapped in this softlock with no prior saves to fall back on, your options are unfortunately limited. Some players have suggested running far away until the tunnel completely unloads from the engine’s memory and then returning, hoping the game recalculates Milten’s coordinates. However, initial community testing indicates this does not reliably fix the missing NPC state.
For PC players, the classic Marvin developer mode might be your only lifeline. While Alkimia Interactive has heavily modernized the game, the beloved debug console remains accessible for moments exactly like this. If you enable Marvin mode, you can attempt to use the console command to insert the required scroll (unconfirmed exact syntax, but likely related to insert itar_scroll_meatbug) or attempt to directly teleport Milten to your location. Keep in mind that using the developer console may permanently disable Steam achievements for that save file, so use it strictly as a last resort to salvage a doomed playthrough.
For PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S players, developer console commands are completely unavailable, making the save-rotation and scroll-stockpiling strategy absolutely mandatory.
The Impact on Your Playthrough
The beauty of Gothic 1 Remake lies in its interconnected, highly reactive world. Actions have permanent consequences, and the sudden closure of a major central hub like the Old Camp is a fantastic narrative device that makes the player feel truly isolated and hunted in a hostile prison colony. However, when combined with technical instability and fragile NPC pathfinding, these hardcore design choices can quickly escalate from challenging to incredibly frustrating.
This bug perfectly highlights the inherent friction between preserving a ruthless 2001 design philosophy and delivering a polished 2026 gaming experience. We expect the developers to address this in an upcoming patch, potentially by adding a guaranteed Meatbug scroll drop near the tunnel entrance, or by entirely overhauling Milten’s pathing nodes in the cave network.
Until that patch arrives, stock up on scrolls, save often, and tread very carefully when the Valley of Mines inevitably descends into civil war.
