Gothic 1 Remake Developers Address Lockpicking Backlash and PC Crashes

Following the launch of Gothic 1 Remake on June 5, 2026, developer Alkimia Interactive has officially responded to the community’s immediate complaints regarding stability issues and controversial early-game mechanics.

While players are enjoying the brutal return to the magical Barrier, two major pain points have surfaced during the opening hours: frequent PC crashes and a punishing lockpicking system that has left many feeling frustrated.

A Monday Patch for PC Instability

Addressing the technical side of the launch, Alkimia Interactive acknowledged that some PC players are experiencing game crashes. To resolve this, the team announced they are targeting Monday, June 8, for the release of the game’s first hotfix patch.

In the meantime, the developers are actively monitoring feedback across Steam and Reddit, urging players to submit technical reports through the THQ Nordic bug tracking portal. Providing hardware details and crash logs will help the team roll out optimization patches more efficiently.

The Lockpicking Debate: Is It Broken or Just Old-School?

The most divisive topic in the community is the lockpicking minigame. In Gothic 1 Remake, lockpicks break easily, prompting players to save their progress before every chest and reload when they run out of tools. Many newcomers find this design loop tedious and have requested unbreakable lockpicks.

Alkimia Interactive defended the design but offered a crucial hint. The developers explained that the high difficulty is intentional for untrained characters. The system becomes significantly more forgiving once you invest learning points into the lockpicking skill. Untrained thievery is meant to be brutal in the penal colony; if you want to plunder chests without constant frustration, you must seek out a proper trainer first.

Surviving the Colony’s Unforgiving Nights

Beyond lockpicking, players are running into other hurdles caused by the game’s uncompromising old-school philosophy. Unlike modern RPGs, Gothic 1 Remake does not feature a simple “wait” or “skip time” menu. If you need to speak with a character who only operates during daytime—such as Thorus, who guards the castle gate between 8:00 and 22:00—you must find a bed to sleep in.

However, beds are scarce. In the Old Camp, there is reportedly only one free bed available for unaligned prisoners, and it is tucked away in an unintuitive location. New players are finding themselves wandering the dangerous night hours with nothing to do but wait for dawn.
