Chapter 3 of Alkimia Interactive’s Gothic 1 Remake shifts the Nameless Hero’s journey toward the outer reaches of the Valley of Mines. To help the Water Mages in their desperate bid to destroy the Barrier (see our chapters-walkthrough), you must retrieve four ancient Focus Stones scattered across the colony.
Each of these magical artifacts is hidden within a treacherous landmark, guarded by environmental puzzles, formidable creatures, and mini-bosses. Preparing for these excursions is essential, especially if you are running a specific character build (check our best-builds and beginner-tips). You won’t have to face them entirely alone, though—each location pairs you with one of your core companions, whom you can learn more about in our key-characters database. This walkthrough covers the locations and strategies for the Sunstone Circle, Mountain Fortress, Troll Canyon, and Monastery Ruins to help you secure the Focus Stones.
The Focus in the Sunstone Circle
Located on the fringes of the dangerous Orc Territory, the Sunstone Circle is a mysterious henge that presents a steep spike in difficulty. Milten assists you during this segment of the chapters-walkthrough. The primary hurdle is the formidable undead mini-boss guarding the focus chamber inside the circle.
Before engaging, ensure you have decent blunt weapons or light magic, as the guardian is highly resistant to standard slashing damage. Milten provides a scroll that is crucial for taking down the undead guardian. Once the boss is defeated, you can safely extract the Focus Stone from its pedestal in the center of the ruins.
The Focus in the Mountain Fortress
Hidden high in the cliffs, the Mountain Fortress is a multi-story stronghold guarded by harpies and bloodflies. You tackle this area alongside Lester. Reaching the fortress requires careful platforming and fighting through waves of flying foes.
Getting past the gate requires finding a way inside the keep. Lester helps you navigate the lower levels, but you will need to search the fortress thoroughly. This area is highly rewarding, offering some of the best mid-game loot in the entire remake. Be sure to check every chest and alcove, and watch out for a secret room containing valuable equipment. Once you clear the harpies and find the deed to the fortress, the Focus Stone can be claimed from the top floor.
The Focus in the Troll Canyon
As the name implies, the Troll Canyon is home to a massive Troll that blocks the path to the pedestal. Diego meets you here to help clear the canyon. Dealing with a full-sized Troll early in the game is nearly impossible through brute force alone.
Look around the environment or check your inventory for a Shrink Monster scroll. Using this spell on the Troll reduces it to the size of a scavenger, making it easy to dispatch. After clearing the beast, you will need to assist Diego in repairing a broken winch to lower the gate leading to the stone pedestal. Don’t forget to grab the Focus Stone from the platform above.
The Focus in the Monastery Ruins
Perched on a steep cliffside, the Ruined Monastery is crawling with Snappers and a young Troll. Gorn joins you for this assault.
The main challenge here is navigating the narrow pathways and finding a way into the locked inner courtyard. You will need to utilize a transformation scroll (such as transforming into a Meatbug) to slip through a small hole in the wall and pull the lever from the inside to let Gorn in. Together, you can defeat the young Troll guarding the ruins and claim the final Focus Stone.
Preparing for the Hunt
