The Hidden Magic of The Valley of Mines
Stealing in the Colony is risky. Getting caught by the guards in the Old Camp or mercenaries in the New Camp usually results in losing your hard-earned ore and getting knocked unconscious. If you want to line your pockets without reloading your save every five minutes, there is a clever trick hidden in the game’s lore.
In-game magic books mention a unique synergy: using the Telekinesis spell to rob people from a distance. Players have confirmed that this mechanic works perfectly in the remake. As long as you have learned the basics of theft and have access to the right magic, you can pilfer keys, ore, and weapons without ever stepping into an NPC’s detection cone.
How to Set Up Remote Pickpocketing
To pull off this magic heist, you need two things: the pickpocketing skill and the Telekinesis spell.
1. Learn Pickpocketing
Before you can steal from a distance, you must know how to steal up close. You need to spend learning points to unlock the pickpocketing skill from a trainer. Note: Make sure to check our guide on learning points and skills to find the right trainer in your chosen camp.
2. Obtain Telekinesis
Telekinesis is a utility spell that lets you grab items from afar. You can find it as a single-use spell scroll early in the game or learn it as a permanent rune if you follow the path of a magician (see our overview of rune magic for details). Scrolls are sold by various magic merchants across the camps, particularly in the Swamp Camp.
Stealing from a Distance
Once you have the skill and the spell ready:
- Locate your target. This trick is exceptionally useful for guards standing in front of chests or named NPCs who carry rare keys.
- Position yourself out of their line of sight, preferably behind a pillar or on a ledge where they cannot easily pathfind to you.
- Equip the Telekinesis spell or rune.
- Target the NPC. Instead of highlighting the environment, the spell will lock onto their inventory pouches when you have the pickpocketing skill active.
- Cast the spell to pull the target’s belongings to your hand.
If done correctly, you will snatch their inventory items remotely. The NPC might look around in confusion, but since you are standing far away and not actively crouching behind them, they will not accuse you of a crime.
Why This Trick is Useful
Normally, pickpocketing requires high dexterity and careful positioning, often resulting in failure if the NPC turns around. Remote pickpocketing bypasses these risks entirely. It is especially useful in high-security areas like Gomez’s castle, allowing you to bypass guards and snatch keys to locked rooms without triggering camp-wide hostility.
For players struggling with the early-game ore economy, this strategy offers a safe way to gather trading materials. Just remember that spell scrolls are consumed on use, so save this technique for high-value targets who carry quest items or expensive loot.
